82All About Ring Worm
What is Ringworm?
Ringworm is the name of a contagious infection, caused by fungus and not by worm. The shape of it resembles a round shaped worm or ring on patient's skin.
Jock Itch is another related fungal infection of ringworm that occurs mainly in the groin area.
Tinea is another name for ringworm. However, this infection gets its name depending on the area of your body, it affects. For instance, if it affects scalp or head, then it is tinea capitis. However, if affects the body area, it is tinea corporis and if affects the feet, it is named as tinea pedis. This is also commonly known as Athletes foot.
Children are mainly victims of this ringworm infection; however, it is not limited to them and can occur to people of all ages.
A round red shaped patch with silvery scales that appears on the outer surface of the skin characterizes ringworm. It is itchy. The patch spreads outwards and would look like a red ring. The center of the ring looks healed and resembles a normal skin. When a person is infected with head or scalp ringworm infections, baldness at the area of infection can occur.
What causes Ringworm?
The fungal spores that cause ringworm is normally found on different people or animals carrying this infection, or even in the soil around you. They enter your body if there is any break or opening in the skin from the source. Moreover, the most areas that are normally affected by ringworms are warm or damp areas. Therefore, fungal spores survive and increase mainly in the areas you sweat a lot.
Contacting the person or animals infected with ringworm can cause ringworm in you. Sharing of combs or unclean clothes are main ways to pass on this infection from human beings. Working on farms or being with pets can cause ringworm infection. Even if the surfaces in the swimming pools are not washed, ringworm infection can occur.
Diagnosing Ringworm
Diagnosing ringworm is quite easy due to its distinct characteristics of red circular scaly ring. However, doctors go one step ahead to diagnose the infection by collecting the infected skin or hair in case, the person has scalp or head ringworm and examining it under a microscope.
What is the Treatment of Ringworm?
Treatment is given according to the type of ringworm (i.e. the area of infection) you are suffering from.
If the ringworm is diagnosed in the early stages, then you can use an oral anti-fungal medication or cream for external use from a pharmacist. Fungrx works best to cure ringworm infection. However, if these medications don't cure the ringworm infection, then it is recommended to consult a doctor. He would be in a better position to recommend an anti-fungal medication that has active ingredients.
Doctor may recommend a corticosteroid to be used externally, if you feel itchy and if the ringworm is inflamed, so that the medication soothes these indications.
Strict routine is also recommended to the people suffering with ringworm to cure it. It includes:
1. Gently clean the affected area and dry.
2. Avoid sharing things like towels, combs or unwashed clothes or bedding.
3. Remember to change the underwear and socks everyday.
4. Affected area should not be touched or scratched, as the ringworm infection can spread to other areas that are broken due to scratching.
Most of the ringworm cases can be cured with proper care and treatment. However, if it doesn't cure or you feel any inconvenience or discomfort during the treatment, visiting a doctor should help you in curing it.

i've recently had one on my forehead OF ALL PLACES!and i'm freaking out i didn't know what a ringworm was till now. it's not realy itchy but it is shaped as a ring and its light pink i'm worried it might get worse.
I'm only 13 years old and I'm so young and I'm scared I found out I have ringworms by my friends telling me and I looked up on the internet and look at pictures and they look similar to what I have and now I know but I'm scared I never had it before
I had ringworm on my face, the creams did not work. I might get Lamisil, though I doubt that would work too. I finally used alcohol like hand sanitizer, and it finally got better! I then used Bleach water at night, it burned like hell but at least it was actually killing and drying up the fungus! Then I stopped using it when it got better, now it's back!! :( it's so quick to come back, and so much harder to get rid of because it's taking a while AGAIN to go away with bleach/water and alcohol. OY!! I hate this crap
